On the cost of crayfish trapping in central Finland
Published Online: 6/1/2020
Abstract
Thirty-seven fishermen were interviewed in order to determine the costs of crayfish trapping in the Province of Mikkeli, that is a typical inland lake area in Central Finland Professional trappers (catch ? 1,000 crayfish, N = 11) caught half of total seasonal catch. Semi-professional trappers (catch < 1,000 crayfish, N = 26) represented 73% of all interviewed fishermen. Trapping costs per crayfish ranged from 3.90 to 67.40 FIM (4 FIM = 1 USD), the average costs being lowest among professional trappers. Profit per crayfish ranged from 0 to 7.9 FIM, average profit being lower among professional trappers. The minimum profitable market price was 8.10 FIM. Marketing effort had a slight positive effect on the market price. CPUE in the professional trappers group was 1.2, which is significantly higher than in the semi-professional group (0.6). Estimated market price per kg of crayfish was 186 - 226 FIM for professional trappers. The reasons for high production prices were: low annual catch, trapping regulations, trapping attitudes, and recreational basis of trapping.
