On the distribution of the introduced crayfish Orconectes limosus in Poland
Published Online:
Abstract
Visits to almost all parts of Poland and examination of the fauna and flora of selected water bodies during the years 1996 to 1998 provided us with preliminary data on the recent distribution of freshwater crayfish in Poland. In total, 19 observations on crayfish were made. In all cases, only the species of American origin, Orconectes limosus, was recorded. No single specimen of any other species was observed throughout the study. The occurrences of O. limosus are more frequent in the northern part of Poland, particularly in the lower parts of the drainage systems of the rivers Odra and Wis?a, and in rivers with smaller watersheds mouthing directly to the Baltic Sea. The recent extension area of O. limosus is remarkably large and therefore studies on the present distribution of native crayfish in Poland are needed to ensure their conservation.
