Developing crayfish populations
Published Online:
Abstract
The restoration of Swedish crayfish waters, using the young of Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana, has now been in progress for seven years. On the basis of test fishing in the autumn of 1975 developing populations were reported from several waters, and in a few instances catches approached the 'pre-plague' dimensions for the first time since the original populations of Astacus astacus Linne were obliterated by the crayfish plague fungus (Aphanomyces astaci Schikora). The progress in restoration is illustrated with data from a few water bodies in the south of Sweden. The methods used in successful transplantation programs are discussed as well as the techniques that are necessary for obtaining relevant data. The development of crayfish populations in other parts of Europe is discussed. Also, adoption of uniform testing and reporting procedures suitable throughout the European area is proposed.
