Methodological considerations for quantitative determination of consumption for the crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus
Published Online:
Abstract
The importance of quantifying crayfish consumption is discussed within the framework of bioenergetics, A laboratory method to measure crayfish consumption using brineshrimp as a food source is presented and analyzed. This method was used for diurnal experiments with juvenile crayfish where it was found that at 20°C they eat at a steady rate through 24 hours with only a slight preference for eating in the dark. Whether the brineshrimp were alive or dead did not influence consumption rates. Other examples of application of the method were included, They illustrated the need to consider potential cyclic eating patterns, the nutritional state, and the high innate variablity of crayfish when designing experiments involving consumption.
