Commercialization of Vermont crayfish species (Orconectes immunis and Orconectes virilis): Putting theory into practice
Published Online:
Abstract
Research and speculation over the last half dozen years has been concerned with the potential for commercial aquaculture and fishing of crayfish species in the northeastern part of the United States, with particular reference to indigenous Orconectes species. This report will test the theory that indigenous populations in Vermont can be successfully exploited for the human food market and for bait for angling. A comparison wi 11 be made between expected catch and observed catch on a small-scale sustained commercial basis, development of market for restaurant and retail sales, and comparison between the predicted economics and observed cash flow, cost and profit. The ability of wild stocks to sustain trapping pressure will be measured and the results summarized.
