The distribution and spread of the yabby Cherax destructor complex in Australia: speculations, hypotheses and the need for research
Published Online:
Abstract
An assessment of the taxonomic history of crayfish in the Cherax destructor complex reveals much morphological variability but comparatively little genetic variability (based on isozyme electrophoresis). With the exception of the albidus and perhaps rotundus morphs there is little known regionalization for a complex which is widespread across the continent. Models to account for this lack of geographic differentiation and widespread distribution invariably include the human agency as a translocator, both before and after the europeanisation of the Australian landscape.
