Studies on ovarian development in the yabby, Cherax albidus Clark
Published Online:
Abstract
Studies were conducted on the rematuration of the ovary of Cherax albidus at constant temperatures of 22°C and 10°C during the post spawning period. No development past stage IV (Johnson 1979) occurred at either temperature. Stimulation of ovarian growth by feeding entire thoracic ganglia or by injection of 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) as a means of supplementing ovary stimulating hormone was not detected after 45 days. The lack of ovarian development in isolated females for periods beyond that in which re-spawning could be expected suggests that final ovarian maturation only occurs in the few days immediately before spawning. It is suggested that ovary stimulating hormone is present at high levels only for this brief period. This finding has implications for transferring the model of reproductive physiology developed from other decapod studies to Cherax species. An alternative model is suggested.
