The crayfish situation in Ukraine
Published Online:
Abstract
Ukraine is one of the major suppliers of crayfish in the world. Out of the total world catch of crayfish of 2,000 metric tons (FAO data for 1968), the USSR catch made up 1,000-1,200 tons with the Ukraine catch accounting for about 700 tons. In some years the Ukraine catch comprised up to 36.6-68.4% of the total USSR catch. The Ukraine crayfishery has a long history but the catches increased most rapidly in the post-war time. Before 1950 the crayfishery was conducted mainly in the central part of Ukraine (the Dnieper and South Bug basins) while at present the largest catches are taken in the southern water bodies (the Sub-Danube lakes and the Dniester estuary).
