Methods and systems useful in the development of aquaculture ventures

Abstract
Aquaculture requires a translation from pure scientific observation to practical methods if it is to achieve its objective commercial quantities at a suitable price. During the development work on an Australian crayfish, Cherax destructor, certain methods and systems were used to organize the development program. A simplified data collection system as well as a total assimilation system were used. The system included all information pertinent to development such as legal aspects, libraries, scientific observation, notes, etc. Both scientific and engineering fields must work in conjunction to produce an artificial environment specific to each species. The complexity of designing a satisfactory environment is quite apparent once under taken; however, outlining the specific roles, or areas of concern for the scientist or the engineer, simplifies the project. Our specific program was outlined in four phases, each phase interlocking with the previous phase to first test successfully, and then expand the development. Scientific observation was done initially with commercial production considered later. It is hoped that the methods, criteria, principles, and philosophy as used in this aquaculture project may be of some aid in the successful organization of other projects.
