Distribution of three rare crayfish species in South Carolina, USA
Published Online: 6/1/2020
Abstract
Distributions of three rare crayfish species, Procambarus echinatus, Distocambarus youngineri and Cambarus spicatus, were investigated in South Carolina. P. echinatus was restricted to the South Fork of the Edisto River drainage system and to the Salkehatchie River of the Combahee River drainage system. All the sites where D. youngineri were collected were within the Saluda River basin and 16 km of the type locality. C. spicatus were recorded from Little River and Cedar Creek within the Broad River drainage systems. An extensive survey of other areas and drainage systems failed to locate other populations of these species. Current distributions appear similar to known past distributions.
