Life history differences between crayfish Astacus astacus and Pacifastacus leniusculus in embryonic and juvenile development, laboratory experiences

Abstract
Juvenile P. leniusculus had a higher growth rate, an indicated by greater feeding activity, and a higher mortality than juvenile A. astacus. The eggs of P. leniusculus hatched 3-4 weeks earlier than eggs of A. astacus. One explanation for these differences is that colder conditions might affect A. astacus more negatively than P. leniusculus. It is suggested that the native species A. astacus has a slower life rhythm than the introduced species P. leniusculus, and that P. leniusculus is the stronger of the two in competitive situations in the absence of the crayfish plague.
