Abstract

The catch efficiency and retention ability of seven commercial crayfish traps were studied. Five other designs were partially tested. The most common trap in the Swedish crayfish fishenes today, a compressible cylindrical trap with nylon netting, was used as a reference trap. Crayfish catch differed significantly with trap design. The largest total catch and highest number of legal-sized crayfish (total length 100 mm or more) was obtained in a new trap design. The reference trap caught marginally fewer crayfish. The mean body length of crayfish caught was correlated with mesh size. The retention ability for legal-sized crayfish was high and varied little between most trap designs.
