Research priorities for procambarid crawfish aquaculture in the southeastern United States
Published Online: 6/1/2020
Abstract
Procambarid crawfishes are cultivated in the southeastern USA in about 60,000 ha of earthen ponds with annual production in excess of 30,000 MT. More than 90% of the crop is produced in Louisiana. The red swamp crawfish, Procambarus clarkii, and white river crawfish, P. zonanguls, are grown using extensive production technology. The procambarid crawfish aquaculture industry is undergoing continued change and researchers must address present and future needs of the industry. Research priorities in population management; water quality; forages and feeds; harvesting; diseases and predators; processing and marketing; and soft crawfish production, are identified and discussed.
