Austropotamobius pallipes is under threat in Wales due to crayfish plague. If this important detritivore was removed from the food chain of mid-Wales rivers there could be far reaching ecological consequences that this review seeks to identify by examining the place of crayfish in aquatic food chains throughout the world.
