Abstract
Studies were conducted on bacterial diseases of the crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes Lereboullet. Spontaneous bacterial infections of A. pallipes have been observed in France. Bacteria isolated from diseased animals were checked for their pathogenicity through experimental infections. A taxonomic study of these microorganisms was also carried out. Histological and cytological examinations allowed us to follow the development of the pathogens in the host. Among the isolated bacteria two different strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens were septicaemic. Prior to host death they developed in the hemolympl, and to a limited extent in muscles, but did not attack other tissues. The P. fluorescens strains proved to be very pathogenic when injected in the body cavity, and for wounded animals. They were also infective by forced ingestion. Other pathogens, such as Citrobacter sp., actively developed in the gut lumen and in the hepatopancreatic tubules of the crayfish but did not invade the blood. They occasionally attacked the cells bounding the tubules, inducing a cellular reaction around the injured acini. Citrobacter sp. showed a moderate pathogenicity for the crayfish when ingested at high doses and caused slow infections. These investigations demonstrated that bacterial diseases are common among A. pallipes in France and that some of the isolated pathogens might have an important incidence on the level of artificial and natural populations of crayfishes.
