Life-history and population biology of red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii in a Mediterranean reservoir
Published Online:
Abstract
Population structure and recruitment of Procambarus clarkii were studied for 3 years in a small freshwater Mediterranean reservoir in southern Portugal. Crayfish lifehistory is a function of external factors, such as hydrological and climatic conditions. The life-cycle develops in an annual cycle with just one distinct recruitment period, and is closely related to the drought-flood seasonal variation. Hydrological conditions may also explain interannual differences of growth and population density. In regard to population structure, juveniles are clearly dominant in winter and spring while adults are almost absent after the recruitment period.
