Status of the foreign crayfish in France
Published Online:
Abstract
Four foreign species are present in France: Orconectes limosus (Rafinesque), Astacus leptodactylus Eschscholtz, Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana and Procambarus clarkii Girard. The distributions as of 1988 and1993 are compared with a discussion on the behavior, and the probable future of each species. Orconectes limosus has completely invaded the French continental territory, excepting high mountain-areas. Astacus leptodactylus, present mainly in the gravel pits, ponds and reservoirs, has an erratic distribution in the streams. Pacifastacus leniusculus seems have a limited expansion in the brooks, larger in the ponds due to farming. Procambarus clarkii is rapidly invading the waterbodies of the south west part of France.
