Lipid content of Procambarus acutus acutus (Girard)
Published Online:
Abstract
Whole-body lipid content of female Procambarus acutus acutus sampled from culture ponds was significantly greater than male crayfish. The proportion of lipids in adult crayfish varied significantly through the culture cycle with lowest lipid level occurring in crayfish sampled after pond reflooding. Sexes contained similar lipid levels after flooding in the fall and in winter, but female crayfish contained significantly more lipid than males during the spring, harvest and summer drawdown periods. Crayfish held in the laboratory and fed commercially available feeds with 9 and 15% crude lipid sequestered significantly more lipid than crayfish provided a 6% lipid feed or not fed. The whole-body lipid of crayfish provided a feed with 15% lipid was about 2.5 times that observed in unfed crayfish. The lipid content of females was significantly greater than males in each of the feed treatments.
