Branchiobdellids on the bodies and eggs of cultured noble crayfish Astacus astacus (L.) in Lithuania
Published Online:
Abstract
Despite prophylactic treatment, a large number of mature branchiobdellids were found during the semi-intensive aquaculture of noble crayfish in Lithuania. Branchiobdella parasita were detected on the crayfish exoskeleton, whilst Branchiobdella astaci occurred in the gill chambers. Branchiobdella parasita was found for the first time in Lithuania. Besides mature branchiobdellids, egg-bearing female crayfish had a lot of white cocoons on their egg walls. The effect of branchiobdellid cocoons on the yield of juvenile noble crayfish is unclear and needs further investigations.
