Abstract

Crayfish reproduction was studied under pond and tank conditions in Simnas Fishery Farm (Lithuania) during 1995-1997. Sex and body length ratios were found to have a significant influence on the mating rate of noble crayfish Astacus astacus (Linnaeus) in semi-intensive culture conditions. The highest mating rate was determined when stocking larger body size males with smaller sized females. The greatest number of fertilised females in hatchery tanks was obtained at a stocking density of the broodstock of 50 individuals/m2 and a sex ratio of 1:1 (Males : Females). Mating and spawning time was prolonged in tank conditions until early December. Mean survival of females in 1995-1997 in the hatchery of Simnas Fishery Farm was 85.7%. The average yield of egg-bearing females in April-June of the years 1996-1997 was 72.2%. The survival of the broodstock in the pond in 1995-1997 was 85.8% at a sex ratio of 1:2 (M:F) and a density of 2.5 ind./m2. A mean yield of egg-bearing females with high fecundity of 76.9% was obtained under pond conditions. In total more than 3,100 egg-bearing females were obtained from the two pond and tank culture reproduction experiments.
