Growth experiments with Astacus astacus in a 6,000 m2 pond previously used for extensive farming of carp

Abstract
The feasibility of conversion of carp ponds of low profitability into more profitable crayfish ponds was investigated for the region of Mittelfranken (Northern Bavaria, Germany). For this purpose 7,000 summerlings of noble crayfish, Astacus astacus, were stocked in a 6,000 m2 experimental pond in 1995. Harvesting 18 months later revealed a net yield of 199.72 kg which corresponds to 221.91 kg ha-1 yr-1. Considering the prices paid on the market for crayfish of that size (average 32.95 g for females and 66.80 g for males) a turnover of more than 20,000 DM can be realised. The resulting commercial revenue is much higher than in extensive carp culture.
