Abstract

A 288-day experiment was conducted to provide preliminary data for the potential polyculture of marron (Cherax tenuimanus) and silver perch (Bidyanus bidyanus). Fingerling perch were stocked with late 0+ marron in 27 m2 concrete tanks to investigate interspecific interactions and the resulting impact on growth and survival of both species. Treatments consisted of marron monoculture, marron + perch free-range, marron + unfed silver perch caged, and marron + fed silver perch caged. Marron in all treatments were fed a commercial pellet. Free-range perch were not given a supplemental feed and an aquatic macrophyte, Vallisneria sp., was included in all tanks. Results showed that the presence of fingerling silver perch did not influence the growth or survival of juvenile marron (P > 0.05). This occurred whether the perch were caged or free range, indicating a lack of direct predation on the marron. Caged silver perch fed a commercial fish pellet grew significantly larger than unfed caged perch (P < 0.01). These results suggest that fingerling silver perch can be stocked with marron of a similar size or larger, without impacting on marron growth or survival.
