Austropotamobius pallipes pallipes in Corsica (France)
Published Online:
Abstract
The island of Corsica has a system of hillbrooks propitious to crayfish life, as evidenced by previous studies. Austropotamobius pallipes pallipes (Lereboullet, 1858) occurs in the eastern part of Corsica and was sampled in 1978 for the first time. The crayfish was probably introduced from the European continent. The animals were released in a small brook running down the eastern part of the island. We have monitored this population regularly from 1978 to 1997. In the first years, without competitors and diseases the crayfish population increased rapidly. The overpopulation of the first settlement has induced a natural migratory spread resulting in colonisation of further brooks. Poaching and a heavy meteorological event have been responsible for a decrease of the crayfish population in the mid 1990s. Nevertheless the adaptability of the animals is very dynamic inducing now a recovery of the population.
