Abstract

The most dense concentrations of crayfishes of genus Astacus in the Caspian Sea are found off Turkmenia. In some years the crayfish catches in the Krasnovodsk Bay alone exceeded 100 metric tons. In 1966-1971 investigations were carried out in accordance with a standard system of 115 stations from Bekdash to Gasan-Kuli. Control catches at a depth of up to 50 m showed that crayfishes are most abundant at depths less than 20 m. Therefore shallow waters were examined regularly. The material was collected by means of crayfish traps. To catch young and non-active specimens and to study their food habits, trawls were used as well as manual collection and scuba diver technique.
