Fluctuation of Vertebrate-like Steroids in the Hemolymph of Narrow-clawed Crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823)

Abstract
This study was carried out with the aim of examining the fluctuations of vertebrate-like steroids during the reproductive cycle of female narrow-clawed crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus, from Aras Dam Lake, Western Azerbaijan, Iran. Gonadosomatic indices (GSI) and vertebrate-like steroid (e.g., estradiol-17?, progesterone, and testosterone) levels in the hemolymph were measured in females sampled in June, August, November and January. From June to November, the ovary development was accompanied by increasing levels of estradiol-17? and progesterone in the hemolymph. Testosterone levels did not significantly differ throughout the reproductive cycle. Our results have shown a post spawning increase in both estradiol-17? and progesterone that may be related to multiple spawning in this crayfish species. Estradiol-17? and progesterone, fluctuate in the hemolymph during the reproductive cycle in parallel with the maturation cycle of oocytes, which suggests the possibility of a role for estradiol-17? and progesterone in oocyte development in A. leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823).
