Freshwater Crayfish (Decapoda: Astacidae) Distribution and Conservation in Bulgaria

Abstract

Three native crayfish species occur in Bulgaria: Astacus astacus, Astacus leptodactylus and Austropotamobius torrentium. Data on their distributions were published in 1961 and 1998. Our goal is to summarize newly collected data on crayfish distributions and population status, as a basis for subsequent river basin and conservation management. Samples were collected during the period 2006 – 2012. The crayfish species with the widest distribution in Bulgaria is A. torrentium, which was recorded at 59 sites at an altitudinal range of 189 – 1504 m, of which 28 sites belonged to the Danube River basin, 29 to the Aegean Sea basin and two to the Black Sea river basin. The two other native crayfish species were less frequently found, with A. astacus at 12 sites at altitudes of 20 – 700 m (ten in the Danube basin and two in the Black Sea basin) and A. leptodactylus at altitudes from 0 – 858 m at 24, 8 and 2 locations in the basins of the Danube River, the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea, respectively. Our results confirmed the occurrence of A. torrentium in 17 Natura 2000 protected areas. The identified potential threats to native crayfish in Bulgarian freshwater ecosystems necessitate urgent water management and conservation measures.
