Trappability, locomotion, and the diel pattern of activity of the crayfish Astacus astacus L. and Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana

Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to study the trappability in relation to the activity of the native European crayfish Astacus astacus Linné and the American crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana, introduced into Sweden in 1960, Finland in 1967, and various other European countries in the 1970s. Differences in activity patterns may be of significance in terms of interspecific interference and resource partitioning. Whether the two species may in the long run co-exist in European water systems is doubtful, because the crayfish plague fungus Aphanomyces is endemic in Pacifastacus.
