The development of noble crayfish, Astacus astacus, culture on the island Gotland is described. The first investigations of the possibilities of farming the noble crayfish started in 1982. The first farms were built in 1986 and in 1990 there are more than 25 crayfish farms covering a pond area of more than 35 ha. The production of consumption size crayfish, 10 cm total length, according the farmers own standard, was in 1989 around 300 kg, and estimated production within a 10 years is more than 10 tons. An overview is given on the three types of pond culture systems: the ditch model, the moat model, and the hybrid model.
