Notes on the occurrence of the calico crayfish (Orconectes immunis) in Germany

Abstract
In a small canal in the Rhine Valley near Karlsruhe, Germany, a population of Orconectes immunis (Hagen, 1870) was detected in autumn 1997. This is the first documented record of the calico crayfish in Germany and, as far as known, even in Europe. Detailed search in this area showed that the crayfish regularly occurred only in this canal. The canal is approximately 3 m wide and 0.4 m deep and its bottom is mostly sandy and muddy. Crayfish were found mainly under stones and wood and among submerged macrophytes. The carapace length of the crayfish ranged from 8 to 37 mm. The male-female relation was nearly 1:1 in the different length groups. The origin of O. immunis found in the Rhine Valley is unclear. Probably it was imported by the aquarium trade as a pet and then released.
